Ancestors from Ireland

pat driscoll ship pass

Massachusetts Passenger and Crew Lists, 1820-1963. Patrick Driscoll came to Boston on May 14th, 1850, aboard the S.S. Adonis

My 3rd grandfather, Patrick Driscoll (my father’s great great grandfather) was from County Cork Ireland. He came to America on May 14, 1850 at age 21, on the ship S.S. Adonis. His wife, Mary came to America from Ireland on September, 18th 1850 at age 20, on the ship S.S. Living Age. Mary’s mother Catherine Sexton came over on May 11th of the same year as well, on the S.S. St. Petersburg. All three landed in Salem Massachusetts.

Although family evidence is not extensively proven, my ancestors most likely came over to America because of the great potato famine of the 1840’s. Many died of starvation after a fungus poisoned the crop that allowed for potatoes to grow. Many Irish decided to flee the country and start a new life in America, as what my father’s great great grandparent’s did.

My great grandmother Margaret Feeney emigrated from Queensland, Ireland in 1910, and came to Boston. My great grandfather James Mahoney emigrated from Cork, Ireland and came to Boston in 1905.
